Dit zijn de eerste reacties op Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker (geen spoilers)

Het einde van een tijdperk is nabij. Deze week komt Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker uit, de afsluiter van niet alleen de nieuwe sequel trilogie maar ook het complete Skywalker saga. Decennia aan films, afgesloten met een epische climax. Althans, dat is wat de trailers ons beloofden. Is J.J. Abrams daar na het controversiële The Last Jedi ook daadwerkelijk in geslaagd?

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker

We kunnen voorzichtig een antwoord op die vraag gaan geven, zonder spoilers. De film is namelijk afgelopen maandag in première gegaan. Pas morgen, woensdag dus, mogen recensenten hun volledige reviews delen, maar op Twitter zijn al de eerste reacties verschenen. We zetten ze op een rijtje voor je.

De reacties zijn helaas niet unaniem positief. Brandon Davis van ComicBook.com was in ieder geval wel fan, en prijst vooral hoe groots de film is opgezet:

#StarWars #TheRiseOfSkywalker is a lot. It’s a big, giant movie with a lot of spectacle and high stakes and it’s definitely going to start a conversation (or a lot of conversations) among fans.

Eric Eisenberg van CinemaBlend kwam helaas teleurgesteld de bioscoop uit. Hij benadrukt de matige fanservice, een minpunt waar meer recensenten over vielen afgelopen maandag:

There is good in Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker. But there is more that is disappointing. There are a number of choices that just don't track, fan service that doesn't work, and ignored details that are missed. I'm bummed. #StarWarsRiseofSkywalker pic.twitter.com/Ztk0VzGc6H

Om maar te demonstreren hoe polariserend Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker lijkt te zijn: Sean O’Connell, de collega van de bovenstaande journalist, is juist zeer enthousiast. Blijkbaar is de film drastisch anders dan The Last Jedi, bomvol actie:

Ook Erik Davis van Fandango is zeer te spreken over The Rise of Skywalker. Hij kreeg zelfs tranen in zijn ogen van de epische afsluiter:

Er zit dus veel in de film, wellicht zelfs te veel. Uproxx’s Mike Ryan benadrukt dat The Rise of Skywalker overvol zit, alsof het eigenlijk drie films hadden moeten zijn. Dat wordt dus goed opletten in de bioscoop!

STAR WARS: THE RISE OF SKYWALKER is certainly the most convoluted Star Wars. There is a lot I liked, but the first half gets so bogged down with exposition and new plot and doodads and beacons and transmitters, it feels like it should have been three movies on its own.

Germain Lussier van io9 zit een beetje in het midden, en liep met een dubbel gevoel de bioscoop uit. Ook hier lijkt benadrukt te worden dat regisseur J.J. Abrams wellicht teveel fans heeft willen pleasen. Of is dat Disney die na The Last Jedi het op safe wilt spelen?

Which I don’t necessarily think is a good thing.

Angie Han van Mashable is ook overweldigd door alles wat in The Rise of Skywalker is gepropt, en noemt haar favoriete personages:

Volgens Peter Sciretta van Slashfilm is Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker bovenal een waardige afsluiter voor de Skywalker saga. Dat is toch alles wat je als fan wilt?

#StarWarsRiseofSkywalker reaction: JJ Abrams nailed it. He was able to bring a cohesive arc to this trilogy that feels like a fitting end to the saga as a whole. I’m so emotionally drained. Star Wars fans will be very happy.

2/ There are SO many moments of pure audience delight. At one point in mid of #RiseofSkywalker, someone yelled "Yeah JJ!" and the whole audience erupted into cheers. This happened several more times.
